Community Events

There are a multitude of community events to make you feel welcome in the Sussex Community.

Our residents are active in various civic activities from City Council meetings to specific areas of concern to our neighborhood.  From the Warrensville-VanAken Revitalization project to the reality of foreclosure situations, our residents have stepped forward to be part of the process.

Our Events represent the work of various comittees that function as a group effort to achieve the task at hand.  Better than the event, our committes are an important way to meet our neighbors.  If you visit Sussex, please attend our events.  If you choose to live in the Sussex Community, please plan on joining one or more of these fine groups.

From spring to fall, you will know you are in the Sussex Community by the Sussex Garden at the triangle formed at the corners of Lomond Blvd., Rawnsdale Road and Norwood Road.  This garden was dedicated to former Shaker Heights mayor and carries the formal plaque naming it "The Patricia Mearns Garden"

The Sussex Garden Committee is the caretaker of this garden, making it a relaxing place to rest or read to the kids or visit with neighbors.

As you stand in Sussex Garden, you can look East and West and see the efforts of the Hanging Basket Committee.  They originated the movement in Shaker to use flower baskets in the community to present the warmth and beauty of our neighborhoods.

As the signs of Spring present themselves, the community comes together for the Perrennial Plant Exchange. On Sunday, May 25, 2008 we will again ask our residents to "Bring a plant and take one home".  We have professional plant experts on hand to help educate and assist in keeping healthy the perrennials that we share.

June brings kids outside and the Sussex Picnic in the Park and Ice Cream Social.  For 2008, this will be celebrated on Sunday, June 22nd.  This is a day of music, games and picnic baskets on the grounds of the Sussex Family Center topped off with Ice Cream extraordinaire!

Every community has homes that have a garage sale.  Well Sussex has a Community Garage Sale.  On Saturday, August 9, 2008, will have advertised that there will be a bunch of garage sales simultaneously occurring in the Sussex Community.  All the houses are marked with a  to let the shoppers know where to stop.  If you live here and don't want to have your own garage sale, you can donate your goods to the Sussex Association and we will sell it on the Community Garage Sale Day and use the proceeds to further improve the Sussex Community.

Come Saturday, September 13, 2008, after the kids are back in school, we will all have a lot to talk about.  The Sussex Summer Gathering and Wine & Cheese Event gives you an opportunity to meet all the new folks that moved in during the summer and enjoy some refreshments and plan events with the families around you.  This is one of our premier events and always provides an opportunity to have a great time and appreciate your neighbors.

Last but not least are all the working committees, from Membership to Database to Newsletter that support and work with all of the above events or committees.
